In hard rock mining, the sole is the lower boundary surface of a horizontal or gently dipping ore body, where the mineralized rock meets the unmineralized country rock beneath it. It is the floor of the lode. The term applies primarily to vein deposits and stratiform ore bodies that run roughly parallel to the bedding or foliation of the surrounding rock, distinguishing it from steeply inclined or vertical veins where such terminology becomes less useful.

The sole is critically important to underground mining because it defines the lower limit of profitable extraction. Mining engineers must determine whether the sole is a clean, sharp contact or a gradational boundary where mineralization fades into barren rock. A sharp sole makes it easier to stop extraction at a defined depth and avoid dilution, whereas a gradational sole forces difficult decisions about cutoff grades and increases waste handling costs.

Recognition and mapping

Identifying the sole requires geological mapping and drill core logging. Experienced miners and geologists read the lithology, assay results, and structural attitude of the deposit to pinpoint where ore grades drop below economic thresholds. The sole's position may vary across the length of a lode, dipping or rising in response to folding, faulting, or original depositional patterns. Surface geology and diamond drilling programs establish the sole's location before extraction begins and during mining as conditions are reassessed.

The term contrasts with the hanging wall, which is the rock above the lode. Together, the sole and hanging wall frame the ore body between them. In collieries and coal mining, comparable language applies, though coal seams often receive more specialized terminology. The sole's exact definition depends on whether the operation uses geological boundaries, grade cutoffs, or both to mark the limit of extraction.

Proper recognition of the sole prevents overextraction of waste rock that would dilute ore quality and raise processing costs. Poor sole definition has historically led to significant economic losses in underground operations, making geological competence in identifying it a core skill for mining production teams.
