In aviation maintenance and military operations, a sortie is a single operational flight by one aircraft from takeoff to landing. It is the basic unit by which flight activity is measured, logged, and tracked. A sortie might last twenty minutes or eight hours depending on the mission, altitude, distance, and aircraft type, but regardless of duration, it counts as one discrete flying event. Maintenance personnel use sortie counts to schedule inspections, monitor component lifecycles, and predict when major overhauls become due.

The sortie is distinct from the flight hour, which measures elapsed time in the air. An aircraft that flies for four hours on a single mission completes one sortie and accumulates four flight hours. Conversely, a squadron flying five separate two-hour patrol flights logs five sorties and ten flight hours total. This distinction matters because some maintenance items degrade by calendar time, others by flight cycles (takeoffs and landings), and still others by accumulated hours. Sortie data feeds directly into predictive maintenance scheduling and helps planners determine when an airframe or engine must come off the flight line.

Military operations planning relies heavily on sortie counts to measure operational tempo and aircrew utilization. A unit might be tasked to generate twenty-five sorties per day, meaning twenty-five individual aircraft departures and recoveries. High sortie rates demand careful coordination between flight line maintenance crews, fuel teams, ordnance handlers, and scheduling officers. Maintenance bottlenecks, weather delays, and equipment failures directly reduce sortie generation capacity.

The word itself comes from the French sortie, meaning a going out or departure, adopted into English military vocabulary during the Napoleonic era to describe a sudden attack or raid. The term migrated into aviation as fixed-wing and rotary aircraft became standard combat platforms. Today it applies across all military air arms: fighters, transport aircraft, helicopters, and specialized airframes all generate sorties.

Maintenance records tie every sortie to specific aircraft tail numbers, departure and recovery times, flight hours logged, mission type, and any discrepancies or work accomplished. This sortie-level documentation creates the audit trail required for safety investigations, compliance verification, and trend analysis. An aircraft with a high unscheduled maintenance rate per sortie signals potential design, manufacturing, or operational problems that warrant deeper investigation.
