SPE: when the sun throws charged particles at your aircraft

A solar particle event (SPE) is a burst of high-energy protons and heavier ions ejected from the sun, usually during or shortly after a solar flare or coronal mass ejection. These particles travel at speeds approaching that of light and arrive at Earth within minutes to hours. For aviation maintenance and flight operations, SPEs matter because the particles penetrate the atmosphere and accumulate in aircraft cabins and avionics, creating radiation exposure and electronic interference risks at altitude.

SPEs are measured by proton flux, typically in units of protons per square centimeter per second (p/cm²/s), and classified by the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center on a scale from S1 (minor) to S5 (extreme). An S3 event usually triggers restrictions on polar routes, since aircraft flying near the poles experience higher radiation dose rates due to Earth's weaker magnetic field in those regions. Crews on polar flights during an SPE may receive doses comparable to several chest X-rays in a single flight.

The relationship between SPE intensity and operational response is direct: higher flux values mean tighter routing constraints and lower flight levels. Airlines and flight dispatch must monitor NOAA alerts in real time. Modern aircraft avionics, particularly solid-state systems and digital flight management computers, can experience bit flips or temporary faults during severe events, though redundancy and shielding mitigate most failures. Older tube-based equipment is generally more robust to radiation.

Maintenance personnel rarely encounter SPE damage directly, since aircraft are already airborne when events occur. However, maintenance planning must account for accumulated radiation exposure in high-altitude and polar-route aircraft; logbooks may flag periodic checks of avionics integrity on aircraft with heavy polar service. Cabin crew and flight crew exposure is tracked under occupational radiation protocols in most countries.

The term SPE is distinct from the continuous solar wind; SPEs are episodic storms rather than baseline conditions. They occur more frequently during solar maximum years in the 11-year solar cycle, making them a seasonal operational consideration rather than a constant constraint.
