splice grafting

A method of grafting by cutting the ends of the scion and stock completely across and obliquely, in such a manner that the sections are of the same shape, then lapping the ends so that the one cut surface exactly fits the other, and securing them by tying or otherwise.

Splice grafting joins two woody stems by cutting both the scion (the upper piece you want to propagate) and the rootstock (the lower anchor) at matching oblique angles, typically 25 to 35 degrees, so their cut faces fit together like a puzzle. The two flat surfaces are pressed tight, aligned so the cambium layers make solid contact, then bound with grafting tape, wax, or string to hold them in place while they fuse. Unlike whip grafting, which uses a tongue-and-groove mechanical lock, splice grafting relies entirely on pressure and alignment to create the union.

The cut angle matters because it increases surface area for cambium contact while keeping the join relatively short, usually 2 to 3 inches along the stem. Both pieces must be nearly equal in diameter for the angled cuts to mesh properly; scion and stock within 0.25 inches of each other work best. The stock is usually cut at a slant in the dormant season or early spring, then the scion is fitted immediately, or the stock may be prepared and stored, ready to receive the scion when materials are on hand.

When splice grafting succeeds and fails

Success depends on clean, sharp cuts made in a single motion so cells remain intact and cambium stays viable. Rough or crushed tissues heal poorly and allow rot. The bind must be tight enough to prevent movement but not so tight it strangles the cambium or cracks the wood. In cool, humid conditions with good air circulation but not wind, grafts knit fastest, usually within 3 to 6 weeks. Failure happens when scion and stock are mismatched in size, when cuts are sloppy, when the bind is too loose or left on too long without loosening, or when conditions are too hot or too dry.

Splice grafting works well for woody ornamentals, fruit trees, and shrubs where scion and stock diameters are similar. It is simpler than whip grafting because it requires no tongue cut on either piece, just two opposing angled cuts. It is less reliable than cleft or wedge grafting when scion and stock differ in size, because the flat surfaces offer less mechanical grip. For larger stock, stronger joints come from cleft or bark grafts instead.

The name reflects the literal joining: the two pieces are spliced, as a rope is spliced by interweaving strands. In timber work, a splice joint connects two beams end to end using bolts or plates; the graft is a botanical analog, using the plant's own healing power instead of fasteners. The method is old, reliable where conditions favor it, and remains standard in nurseries and among growers who propagate fruit or ornamental trees by hand.
