Spot UV: selective gloss coating that catches light and touch
Spot UV is a selective coating process where ultraviolet-cured varnish is applied to specific areas of a printed sheet, creating islands of high gloss against a flat or matte background. The varnish is cured instantly by exposure to UV light, forming a hard, transparent layer that enhances color saturation, adds tactile contrast, and protects those areas from wear.
The process begins with a printing plate or digital template that masks all but the target zones. The uncured varnish is applied through flexographic or offset printing units, then immediately passes under UV lamps operating in the 254-365 nanometer range. Cure times are typically 0.5 to 2 seconds depending on lamp intensity and varnish formulation. Unlike flood UV coating, which covers an entire sheet, spot UV keeps the rest of the substrate untreated, reducing material cost and allowing mixed finish effects on a single piece.
Common applications and variants
Spot UV is standard on premium packaging: cosmetics boxes, wine labels, business cards, and book covers. It highlights logos, product images, or key typography. Some operations combine spot UV with aqueous or solvent-based topcoats on the same sheet. LED-UV systems, which emit narrower wavelength bands, are gaining adoption because they cure faster and generate less heat, important when varnishing heat-sensitive substrates like certain plastics or thin papers.Two main failure modes occur in production. Uneven cure results from inconsistent lamp distance or varnish thickness, leaving soft or tacky patches. Adhesion loss happens when the substrate surface lacks tooth, or when dust or ink residue sits between varnish and paper. Specialty primers or corona treatment can improve anchorage on difficult surfaces.
The name derives from the varnish's response to ultraviolet radiation, which triggers photoinitiators in the resin to cross-link rapidly. 'Spot' distinguishes this method from full coverage. In finishing hierarchies, spot UV sits between high-touch digital embellishment (foil, embossing) and economical overall coatings, offering visible impact at moderate cost per unit when run volumes justify setup.
