A containerized freight terminal may occupy 20 to 100 acres and handle 300,000 to 1,000,000 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent units) annually. Bulk terminals for grain, coal, or minerals use specialized infrastructure: hopper cars, conveyor systems, and sometimes covered storage. Passenger terminals, smaller in footprint, focus on ticketing, waiting areas, and rapid turnaround of trains and connecting buses or taxis.
Rail terminals are sited where rail networks intersect major routes or where natural geography creates a break in transport chains, such as ports, inland river terminals, or mountain passes. Urban terminals often sit in constrained spaces and must minimize congestion on local roads. Intermodal terminals serving containers and trailers require flat land, good drainage, and robust track geometry to handle 286,000 pound gross rail loads without settlement. The terminal layout follows a hub design: arriving trains use dedicated reception tracks, cargo is transferred via a marshalling area, and departing trains load from separate dispatch tracks.

The name reflects function: a railroad terminal is where rail service terminates or begins, forcing transfer to an alternative carrier. The term also applies to passenger rail stations serving intercity routes, though station is more common in that context. In supply chain vocabulary, rail terminals are classified as intermodal facilities when they serve multiple transport modes, distinguishing them from rail yards, which are purely operational hubs for sorting and assembling trains.
