A squally finish is one where quality, texture, or appearance varies across the work surface in an unacceptable way. Rather than uniform coverage or a consistent sheen, you get patches of dull areas next to glossy ones, thin spots beside heavy buildup, or regions where the coating has failed to bond properly. In manufacturing, squally describes any surface defect caused by inconsistent application, material degradation, or process variation that leaves the part looking patchy and substandard.
The term appears most often in coating and finishing work: painting, varnishing, powder coating, and electroplating all produce squally results when spray patterns are uneven, material viscosity fluctuates, or substrate preparation is incomplete. A squally paint job might show dry patches where atomization was poor, or wet runs where spray pressure spiked. In electroplating, squally deposits appear as areas of thin plating interspersed with thicker regions, often caused by uneven current distribution or contaminated solution. Textile dyeing and finishing also produces squally goods when color uptake varies across the fabric width or length.
Why this matters to inspection
Squally work gets caught at quality gates because it fails visual and sometimes functional standards. A squally powder coat may have adhesion problems in the thin areas. Squally paint finishes can expose substrate, invite corrosion, and fail aesthetic requirements for consumer products. The irregular texture also makes the surface harder to measure and validate: what looks acceptable under one light may reveal its faults under another angle. This unpredictability makes squally parts difficult to rework; you cannot simply touch up without making the problem worse.
Prevention requires control of application speed, spray distance, material temperature, substrate cleanliness, and equipment maintenance. In high-speed automated lines, squally results often signal nozzle wear, filter clogging, or calibration drift. The word itself carries a negative tone that reflects the shop floor reality: squally output means lost time, scrap, or rework, and it demands troubleshooting to identify whether the fault lies in material, equipment, or operator technique.
