joistwork: the skeletal framework holding up a floor or roof

Joistwork is the system of parallel beams, called joists, that span between supporting walls, beams, or columns to carry the weight of a floor, ceiling, or roof. Each joist is typically a rectangular beam of wood, steel, or engineered lumber, spaced 12, 16, or 24 inches apart depending on span length, load, and material. The joists sit on or are fastened to bearing surfaces and work together as a structural grid, with the floor or roof decking nailed or screwed to their top edges. This arrangement distributes concentrated loads across a wide area and prevents sagging under live loads such as occupants, equipment, or weather.

In wood-frame construction, joists are usually 2 by 8, 2 by 10, or 2 by 12 nominal lumber, sometimes doubled or sistered when additional strength is needed. Steel joistwork uses open-web joists, which are lightweight trusses with a continuous top chord and bottom chord connected by angled web members; these span longer distances than solid steel beams and reduce total weight. Engineered lumber joists, including I-beams and laminated veneer lumber, offer consistent strength and better resistance to moisture and shrinkage than solid timber.

Installation and Common Problems

Joists must be fully supported at both ends; undersized joists or excessive spacing cause deflection (sagging), which can crack plaster, crack tile, or allow floors to feel bouncy. Poor ventilation beneath wooden joistwork invites rot and insect damage; in crawl spaces, adequate air gaps or moisture barriers are essential. Inadequate blocking or bridging between joists allows lateral movement and can amplify vibration, particularly in upper floors of commercial buildings.

The term "joistwork" appears in building codes and specification sheets to describe the complete assembly rather than individual joists. It is distinct from the beams that support joists at bearing points, though the language is sometimes conflated in casual speech. Proper joistwork design requires calculation of deflection limits, lateral bracing, fire ratings, and acoustic properties, all of which vary by building type and jurisdictional code.
