An SRB is a large solid rocket motor attached to the side of a launch vehicle to provide additional thrust during the initial phase of flight. Each SRB contains a solid propellant grain, typically ammonium perchlorate composite propellant (APCP), packed inside a steel case. The two SRBs on the Space Shuttle orbiter, for example, each stood 149 feet tall and weighed 185,000 pounds, generating 3.3 million pounds of thrust per booster at sea level.
SRBs burn from ignition until complete propellant depletion, typically 120 to 140 seconds depending on the vehicle and mission profile. Unlike liquid engines, solid boosters cannot be throttled, shut down mid-flight, or restarted once ignited. This makes the ignition sequence critical: both boosters must receive electrical command signals simultaneously to prevent asymmetric thrust. The booster cases are designed to be recovered after separation and refurbished for reuse, which requires inspection of internal surfaces, liner integrity, and case segments.
Flight profile and structural stress
SRBs separate from the main vehicle at a predetermined point, typically when thrust drops below a specific level or at a set mission elapsed time. Separation ordnance and springs eject the boosters away from the flight path. The severe structural loads during boost phase, especially at transonic and supersonic speeds, subject both the booster case and the vehicle attachment structure to bending moments and vibration. Booster case stress fractures, erosion of the nozzle throat due to hot gas flow, and crack propagation from weld seams are common maintenance concerns.
Post-flight inspection involves checking the case interior for erosion depth, liner degradation, and propellant voids. Salt water corrosion is a hazard for boosters recovered downrange from coastal launch sites. The O-rings that seal the field joints between case segments must be examined for blow-by (hot gas exposure) and resurfaced or replaced as needed. Nozzle insulation can be damaged during operation and must be surveyed and repaired before reuse.
The term SRB is specific to NASA spaceflight, though other launch providers and military programs use comparable solid rocket motors. The designation distinguishes these large, reusable strap-on boosters from smaller solid rocket motors used for attitude control, separation, or orbital maneuvering on other spacecraft.
