A level staff or graduated rod used by surveyors to measure differences in level, or to measure horizontal distances by sighting the stadia hairs (graduations) through a telescope.

A stadia rod is a graduated staff, typically 10 to 15 feet long, held vertically in the field while a surveyor sights it through a telescope mounted on a transit or level. The observer reads the graduations visible between two crosshairs (the stadia hairs) in the scope's reticle. This reading, combined with the distance and angle between the hairs, allows rapid calculation of both horizontal distance and vertical difference without measuring tape or chain.
The method exploits a simple optical principle: the ratio of the distance between stadia hairs to the focal length of the telescope equals the ratio of the rod interval visible between those hairs to the distance from scope to rod. If the telescope's stadia constant (the multiplier) is 100, and you see a rod interval of 1.5 feet between the hairs, the horizontal distance is roughly 150 feet. A middle hair gives the vertical component. The rod itself carries clear foot and tenth-foot graduations, often in alternating red and white bands for visibility.
Stadia rods come in two main types: solid rods, typically painted wood or aluminum up to 20 feet, and folding rods that collapse to 5 or 6 feet for transport. High-quality rods have metal bands at joints and friction locks to prevent telescoping drift. Some have a target circle that the surveyor aligns to improve sighting accuracy. The level-rod style is simpler (no target), while the transit-rod version includes a plumb-line socket at the base so the rod stands without a second person.
Where stadia sits in modern surveying
Stadia measurement is fast and tolerates rough terrain; a single operator can work uphill or across water without setting up levels or running a tape. Accuracy is typically within 0.1 to 0.3 feet over distances to 300 feet, adequate for topographic surveys, cross-sections, and reconnaissance work. The method fell out of favor in property surveying after electronic total stations arrived, but remains common in civil engineering fieldwork, especially where light equipment and speed matter more than precision to the nearest inch.
The term stadia derives from ancient Greek stadion, a unit of length. The concept of using rod intervals and optical magnification for distance measurement dates to the 19th century and appears in many engineering textbooks as a cornerstone of indirect measurement. Modern surveyors may rarely deploy a stadia rod on projects with GPS or EDM available, but the principle remains part of the trade's foundation, and the rod itself is cheap, unbreakable, and independent of batteries or calibration checks.
