A graduated rod used to measure the distance of the place where it stands from an instrument having a telescope, by observing the number of the graduations of the rod that are seen between certain parallel wires (stadia wires) in the field of view of the telescope.

A stadium is a graduated rod, typically 10 to 14 feet long, held vertically at a distant point and viewed through a surveying instrument such as a transit or level. The observer reads the rod against two horizontal stadia wires in the telescope's field of view to calculate the horizontal distance from the instrument to the rod. The spacing of the wires, combined with the length of rod visible between them, gives a direct measurement without additional calculation when using standard instruments.
The rod itself is usually made of wood or aluminum, marked with clear graduations in feet and decimals or meters and centimeters depending on the instrument and survey requirements. Alternating colors (red and white, or black and white bands) improve visibility through the telescope, especially at distance. A target or crosshair may be mounted on the rod to help the observer position it precisely on the ground point being measured.
How stadia measurement works
The principle relies on similar triangles. When the stadia wires subtend a fixed angle in the telescope, the distance to the rod is proportional to the length of rod visible between the wires. Most instruments are calibrated so that distance in feet equals the rod interval (in feet) multiplied by 100. For example, if 0.5 feet of rod appears between the wires, the distance is 50 feet. This method avoids the need to measure every shot separately with a tape or chain, making it faster for reconnaissance surveys and open terrain where moderate precision suffices.
Stadia distance is most accurate when the rod is held truly vertical and the terrain is relatively level or the rod is perpendicular to the line of sight. On steep slopes or long shots, errors accumulate; the method loses reliability beyond about 300 feet with hand-held rods, though modern optical instruments and longer rods extend this range. Wind, heat shimmer, and poor light degrade readings. For control surveys requiring high precision, stadia is now typically confined to rough checks or to instruments paired with electronic distance meters.
The term stadium comes from the Latin name for a unit of length; surveyors adopted it to describe the rod itself because the measurement principle depended on observing a fixed linear interval. Modern practice has largely shifted to electronic distance measurement (EDM) and GPS, but stadiums remain common in teaching, in pocket transits, and on surveys where equipment failure or cost drives the choice back to optical methods. The stadia interval factor (usually 100) and the multiplier constant are always specified by the instrument maker.
