A stag-headed tree has lost its terminal and upper lateral branches to dieback, leaving only bare wood protruding above the living crown. The dead limbs resemble the antlers of a stag, which is the origin of the term. This condition indicates the tree is in physiological decline, though not necessarily dying overall; the lower and middle portions of the crown may remain fully foliated and functional.
Stag-heading occurs across species but is particularly common in mature oaks, beeches, and conifers exposed to prolonged stress. Root damage from waterlogging, soil compaction, or pathogenic infection reduces water transport to the terminal regions, which are the farthest from the root system and therefore the first to desiccate. Repeated frost cracks, storm damage, or exposure following crown thinning can accelerate the process. The condition typically develops over several years as successive growing seasons fail to deliver enough water pressure to reach the highest branches.
In forestry assessment, stag-heading is recorded as a crown defect and reduces the timber grade of affected trees. The dead branches present a hazard in managed woodland, as they may fall without warning, particularly during high winds or after ice loading. Foresters use the extent of stag-heading as one diagnostic indicator of tree health alongside crown transparency and branch dieback patterns.
The term appears in forestry records and arboricultural surveys dating to at least the 19th century. It is distinct from simple branch loss due to pruning or storm breakage, because stag-heading implies internal physiological failure rather than external damage. A stag-headed tree will not recover the lost terminal shoots; however, the tree may stabilize and continue growing from its remaining sound branches, or it may decline further depending on the underlying cause of stress.
