A body style for cars in which the roof is extended rearward to produce an enclosed area in the position and serving the function of the boot (trunk) of a sedan or saloon.

A station wagon extends the roofline and cargo floor of a passenger car rearward, typically by 12 to 18 inches beyond a comparable sedan, to create an enclosed loadspace that sits where the trunk would be. This extra volume, usually 70 to 85 cubic feet behind the rear wheels, is accessed by a tailgate that swings down or slides up. The result is a vehicle that maintains four to five passenger seats while offering roughly three times the cargo capacity of a standard sedan.
The extended roof requires reinforcement of the C-pillar and rear frame structure. Most station wagons use unibody construction, with the cargo section integrated into the overall chassis rather than mounted as a separate bed or box. Suspension tuning must account for heavier rear loading; many production wagons use stiffer rear springs or adjustable dampers to manage the weight distribution change when loaded. Aerodynamics suffer slightly compared to sedans, with a blunt rear end generating drag; some wagons employ a raked roofline that tapers downward toward the tailgate to recover some efficiency.
Variants and market positioning
Station wagons occupy the middle ground between sedans and light trucks or crossovers. All-wheel drive versions exist, common in European markets. Some manufacturers build performance versions with upgraded engines and chassis tuning. A related format, the shooting brake, applies wagon proportions to sports cars or coupes, though this is rarer. The basic wagon format has existed since the 1950s as a family hauling solution before SUVs and crossovers became dominant.
The name derives from early examples built by coach builders adjacent to railway stations in the northeastern United States, originally designed to shuttle passengers and luggage between stations and nearby towns. This origin is purely historical; modern station wagons have no closer relationship to stations than any other vehicle.
Common failure points include the tailgate mechanism, which sees repeated stress and corrosion, and rear suspension components that wear faster under sustained heavy loading. Roof leaks at the C-pillar seam are not uncommon in older examples. Visibility to the rear is complicated by the longer overhang and the tailgate itself, requiring larger or multiple mirrors and, on modern examples, backup cameras.
