A city titty is a low, rounded dome or button installed between traffic lanes on urban roads and parking lots. Typically made of rubber or plastic, it stands only 2 to 4 inches high and is anchored to the asphalt. Drivers feel it under their tires as a tactile and auditory warning that they are drifting out of lane, or as a physical barrier when turning or parking across marked boundaries.

The term belongs to shop and fleet talk, used by mechanics, parking attendants, and delivery drivers who encounter them daily. The name likely arose from the dome's shape and its somewhat comical prominence in otherwise flat pavement. Regional slang varies: some areas call them road buttons, mushrooms, or bumps. Unlike painted lines alone, these markers work at night, in rain, and when visibility is poor, making them common on approaches to toll plazas, parking garages, and busy commercial intersections.

Materials and Installation

Rubber city titties are usually made from recycled rubber compound, molded as a single piece with a flat or slightly domed base 4 to 6 inches across. Plastic versions are often injection molded from HDPE or polycarbonate and may include reflective studs embedded in the top. Both types are glued or bolted to dry, clean pavement. Proper installation requires clean surface preparation, as adhesion failure leads to the marker coming loose under wheels.

Fleet operators use them to enforce parking boundaries and lane discipline without physical rails or curbs that consume space or require maintenance. In high-traffic zones they can wear unevenly, developing a slick upper surface or breaking under sustained lateral stress from turning trucks. Plowing equipment can rip them free, and thermal cycling in cold climates causes some adhesives to fail. Replacement is straightforward but labor-intensive when applied in quantity.

The city titty remains cheaper and faster to deploy than rumble strips, speed humps, or painted curbs, which explains its dominance in parking lots and congested urban streets. However, they offer no friction advantage and do not slow traffic, only warn or obstruct it laterally. Their low profile means they do not interfere with snow clearing or street sweeping, an advantage over taller traffic calming measures.
