steek: the reinforcement stitches that bind a knit cut

A steek is a column of stitches, typically 4 to 10 stitches wide, that runs vertically through a knitted fabric before the fabric is cut. It functions as a reinforced bridge: you machine-stitch or hand-stitch through these stitches along both edges of the intended cut line, then cut the fabric between them. The steek holds the cut edges together and prevents unravelling when the surrounding stitches are later unpicked or secured into a new seam.

Steeking is essential in traditional knitwear construction, particularly in Fair Isle and Shetland sweater making. Rather than knitting a garment in separate pieces and seaming them (the modern approach), a knitter can work the entire piece as a tube on circular needles, keeping the fabric seamless and allowing complex all-over patterns to flow uninterrupted. When the piece is finished, the steeks allow strategic cuts to create armholes and neck openings without the labour of short-row shaping or other shaping techniques.

The steek itself is usually knitted in a single solid colour or stockinette stitch, distinct from the patterned fabric it sits within. Common practice is to work the steek stitches in every round alongside the main pattern, keeping them live on the needles or marking them clearly. After cutting, the steek edges are either grafted together (seamed invisibly using Kitchener stitch), left as a facing hidden inside the garment, or secured by binding or crochet.

Common problems: insufficient stitch width leads to fraying or dropping stitches at the cut edge; machine-stitching lines placed too close to the cut line cause puckering; delayed stitching before cutting allows stitches to shift and creates weak points. The name derives from Old Norse and Shetland dialect, reflecting the technique's centuries-old roots in Nordic knitting traditions.

Steeking remains standard practice among hand knitters and is increasingly used in industrial knitwear where seamless or minimal-seam construction is desired. Machine knitting produces steeks automatically as part of the design; hand knitters must plan and execute them consciously. The technique sits at the intersection of efficiency and pattern complexity: it costs time upfront but eliminates multiple seaming steps and enables designs impossible with conventional piece-by-piece assembly.
