The term most commonly applies to power delivery systems where current flows continuously from source to load at a steady potential difference, as opposed to alternating current (AC) which reverses direction periodically. Straight supply is fundamental to battery-powered equipment, electroplating operations, and electrolysis processes that require constant unidirectional current.
Straight current differs fundamentally from rectified or pulsating DC in its smoothness and consistency. A true straight supply shows negligible ripple voltage, meaning the output stays nearly flat at its nominal value. Industrial systems achieve this using heavy filter capacitors, chokes, or regulated power supplies that maintain the voltage within tight tolerances. Equipment requiring straight current includes motor controllers using thyristors, precision welding machines, and electrochemical cells where voltage stability directly affects process quality and material deposition rate.
The distinction matters because many industrial devices tolerating AC cannot work properly on pulsating DC. A battery charger designed for a 48-volt forklift expects genuinely straight output; ripple exceeding a few hundred millivolts can reduce charging efficiency or damage sensitive electronics. Rectifier systems producing rough DC may deliver average voltage at the correct level but fail to supply power steadily enough for precision work. Industrial power distribution rarely uses the term straight anymore; modern practice specifies output characteristics numerically (voltage, ripple factor, regulation) rather than relying on this older descriptor.
The name comes from the visual appearance of a DC waveform on an oscilloscope: a flat, straight horizontal line, compared to the wavy sine curve of AC. Telegraph operators used straight similarly to mean uninterrupted signal flow. In modern electrical work, you encounter the term mainly in older documentation, legacy equipment manuals, and maintenance contexts where technicians describe a power supply as straight to mean it is providing clean, stable DC without noise or fluctuation.
