A straight-eight is an internal combustion engine with eight cylinders arranged in a single line, all firing into a common crankshaft. The cylinders sit parallel to one another along the length of the engine block, rather than in a V configuration or split arrangement. This layout made the straight-eight the dominant design for large American, British, and European automobiles from the 1920s through the early 1950s, particularly in luxury and full-size vehicles where smoothness and displacement could justify the engine's considerable length.
The mechanical advantage of eight cylinders in a straight line lies in engine balance. With proper firing order, the reciprocating forces of the pistons largely cancel each other out, producing exceptionally smooth operation at all speeds. A typical straight-eight displaced 3.5 to 5.5 liters and produced 100 to 200 horsepower, depending on compression ratio, induction method, and year of manufacture. The engine could run at modest speeds with minimal vibration, a quality that buyers of high-end motorcars explicitly demanded and were willing to pay for.
Why the straight-eight declined
The straight-eight engine fell out of favor after World War II for practical rather than performance reasons. Its length made it difficult to package in smaller, more fuel-efficient cars that postwar markets increasingly demanded. The V-8 engine took up less front-to-back space, allowed lower hood lines, and freed interior volume for passengers. By the 1960s, no major manufacturer in North America or Europe was producing straight-eights for production vehicles. The last examples were phased out in luxury marques like Packard and Daimler by the early 1950s.
Straight-eights remain prized in collector vehicles and are occasionally rebuilt for restoration work. They are also encountered in industrial and marine applications where their smoothness and low-RPM torque characteristics remain valuable. Parts availability is limited; most restoration work relies on machine shops that specialize in period engines or careful sourcing from salvage and reproduction suppliers.
