A stub axle is a short, rigid arm that extends from the main axle housing or steering knuckle to support a single wheel. Unlike a through-axle, which passes completely across a vehicle and carries wheels on both sides, a stub axle terminates at its wheel attachment point. Each wheel of a pair gets its own stub axle, meeting at or near the vehicle centerline. This design is standard on independently suspended vehicles and modern steering systems where each wheel must move vertically without affecting the other.
Stub axles are commonly found on front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive vehicles, where they work as part of a strut or double-wishbone suspension. The stub axle integrates with the steering knuckle, the component that rotates when you turn the wheels. On front axles, the stub axle carriers typically include a hub that mounts brake rotors and wheel bearings. Rear stub axles on independent suspensions perform similar functions but without steering; they simply locate and support the wheel while allowing vertical motion through springs and dampers.
Construction and Loading
Stub axles are manufactured as forged or ductile iron components, typically 8 to 16 inches long depending on vehicle size and suspension geometry. They must handle radial loads (the vehicle's weight), braking torque (transmitted through brake friction), and side loads during cornering or rough terrain. The inner bore receives a taper or spline to lock onto the main axle shaft, while the outer end accommodates the wheel hub via a tapered roller bearing or cartridge bearing assembly. Stresses concentrate at the fillet radius where the stub axle meets the knuckle, a critical fatigue point that engineers carefully contour to avoid premature failure.
The term "stub" reflects the component's abbreviated length compared to full-width axles found on rigid rear axles or on older vehicles with solid beam fronts. In those contexts, the axle extends the entire width; a stub axle does the minimum work to locate and support one wheel. This economy of material and simplicity of manufacturing has made stub axles the default solution for independent suspension, allowing engineers to optimize weight and cost without sacrificing load capacity or steering precision.
Common failure modes include fatigue cracking at the fillet if impact loads are severe, spline wear if the axle shaft connection loosens, and corrosion at the interface with the knuckle in salt-heavy climates. Inspection focuses on cracks visible under the hub assembly and excessive play in the stub axle connection. Replacement requires removing the wheel, brake components, and the hub bearing assembly, then extracting the stub axle from the knuckle, a job requiring proper presses to prevent damage to adjacent parts.
