stubble

To produce a crop in a field of stubble that remains after a preceding crop is removed, either by sowing a second crop or by allowing shoots to sprout from the roots of the stubble.

Stubbling is the practice of establishing a new crop directly into the standing or freshly cut residue of a harvested crop, without ploughing or turning the soil. The word comes from the woody base and root system that remains after grain, hay, or other crops are cut: the stubble itself. The technique exploits existing soil structure, moisture retention, and root networks rather than destroying them through conventional tillage.

Two distinct methods exist. In stubble cropping, a second commercial crop is sown among the stubble of the first, cereal after legume, or catch crop after spring grain. In stubble regeneration, shoots sprout directly from the cut stems and roots of perennial species like lucerne (alfalfa) or clover without replanting. The choice depends on crop type, climate, soil condition, and market demand. Annual crops require fresh seeding; perennial systems rely on dormant buds in the stubble crown.

Stubbling reduces fuel costs and machinery wear compared to ploughing, and improves soil carbon retention. However, it carries real disadvantages. Residue density can interfere with seed placement and seedling establishment, requiring coulter systems or inter-row cultivation to achieve adequate soil contact. Disease and pest populations may persist in the stubble and infect the new crop. Soil compaction from the previous harvest can hinder root penetration of the second crop, especially in wet conditions. Volunteer plants from the first crop become weeds that compete with the new establishment.

The term stubble itself derives from Old English stubbel, meaning short and blunt. The agricultural sense has been in use since at least medieval times. Stubbling as a verb emerged during the 20th century as conservation tillage and reduced-input farming gained traction, particularly in Australia and the Mediterranean region where water retention and soil protection drive agronomic choice.

Stubbling sits within the broader landscape of conservation agriculture and no-till systems, though it is less radical than full no-till establishment. It works best in dry climates with reliable water access, where organic matter decomposition is slow and residue provides sustained mulch benefit. In high-rainfall areas or on heavy clay soils, the build-up of surface residue can become a liability, promoting slug and disease activity that makes stubble crops economically risky.
