subequigranular: crystals that *almost* match in size

A rock or ore is subequigranular when its mineral crystals are nearly uniform in size, but not perfectly so. This sits between two extremes: equigranular rocks have crystals of essentially identical diameter, while inequigranular rocks show obvious variation. Subequigranular means you see mostly similar-sized grains with minor departures from that uniformity, typically a spread of 20 to 40 percent in the longest crystal dimension.

The term applies chiefly to igneous and metamorphic rocks encountered in mining and exploration. A subequigranular granite might contain feldspar and quartz crystals averaging 3 to 5 millimeters, with a scattering of grains at 2 millimeters and a few larger phenocrysts at 8 millimeters. The variations arise from different cooling rates or growth conditions during crystallization. In ore mineralogy, a subequigranular sulfide assemblage is common in massive or semi-massive zones where precipitation occurred under relatively steady conditions.

Recognition and significance

Petrographers distinguish subequigranular texture under hand lens and thin section by comparing grain sizes systematically across the rock. It is less striking than the obvious banding of a porphyritic texture but more ordered than a truly random grain-size distribution. The distinction matters because texture reflects crystallization history and cooling rate, which influence ore distribution, rock strength, and commodity recovery efficiency.

In mining assessment, subequigranular textures in target lithologies often indicate stable magmatic or metamorphic conditions, which can correlate with predictable mineral zoning and grades. Conversely, radical shifts toward porphyritic or very fine textures nearby may signal fresh intrusion or later fluid events. Drillers and blast engineers also note texture because more uniform grain sizes tend to break more uniformly under load, affecting fragmentation outcomes in both rock breakage and ore processing.

The prefix 'sub' acknowledges that perfect equigranularity is geologically uncommon. Real crystalline rocks nearly always show some size scatter. Subequigranular is therefore a practical midpoint term: it signals that variation exists but is mild enough to call the rock essentially homogeneous in grain structure.
