subdeck: the structural layer beneath a deck's surface
A subdeck is the load-bearing framework that sits directly under a deck's wearing surface. In bridges, it typically consists of steel or reinforced concrete beams, stringers, and cross-bracing that span between the main supports and carry traffic loads down to the piers. In ships, the subdeck is the structural deck immediately below the weather deck, often called the 'tween deck, which provides watertight compartmentation and structural rigidity to the hull.
The distinction between a deck and its subdeck matters because the wearing surface, which takes direct impact and weathering, is often replaced or repaired without disturbing the subdeck's integrity. In bridge construction, the subdeck may support a concrete wearing course, asphalt overlay, or timber deck boards; these can deteriorate while the subdeck remains sound. On wooden ships, multiple subdecks create the distinction between the upper weather deck and lower cargo or gun decks, each with different structural requirements.
Common failure modes and inspection concerns
Corrosion of steel subdecks in marine environments or where road salt is present remains the primary cause of structural degradation. Water penetration between the wearing surface and subdeck creates pockets of trapped moisture that accelerate rust in steel structures and freeze-thaw damage in reinforced concrete. In older wooden ship subdecks, rot and insect damage compound the problem of moving loads and vibration. Regular inspection of the interface between deck and subdeck is critical; corrosion staining, spalling, and sagging all signal that the subdeck may be failing beneath an apparently sound wearing surface.
The term reflects the shipbuilding hierarchy of deck nomenclature, where the main deck is the principal structural element and layers below it are named as subdecks or orlop decks. In bridge terminology, the subdeck is sometimes called the floor system or main deck structure, though subdeck remains standard in civil engineering documentation. The relationship between deck and subdeck is essential: the wearing surface is sacrificial and temporary; the subdeck is the long-term structural investment.
