A suicide battery is a single-use power cell engineered to render its host device inoperable once the battery itself reaches depletion. Unlike conventional batteries that can be replaced to restore function, a suicide battery is designed to trigger a permanent lock, shutdown, or mechanical failure when its stored energy runs dry. The device becomes scrap rather than receiving a fresh cell.

The mechanism varies by application and intended final state. Some implementations use a chemical reaction that corrodes internal contacts or fuses a circuit breaker when voltage drops below a threshold. Others rely on a spring-loaded latch or solenoid that locks when power ceases, preventing battery removal or rendering the device physically inoperable. Proprietary firmware can also enforce a software lock once battery voltage signals depletion, making the device refuse to function even if power is restored later.

Purpose and business model

The suicide battery exists primarily to enforce single-use consumption models and prevent refurbishment. Original equipment manufacturers embed these cells in devices intended to be disposed of and replaced as a whole unit rather than serviced. This approach guarantees repeat sales, eliminates third-party battery suppliers, and prevents end-users from extending device life through cell replacement. The practice is common in medical devices, consumer electronics, and industrial equipment where manufacturer control over replacement cycles is a revenue strategy.

Suicide batteries raise significant environmental and right-to-repair concerns. They force landfill disposal of otherwise functional devices when only the battery has depleted, generating electronic waste and concentrating valuable materials in disposal streams. Jurisdictions in the European Union and certain US states have begun restricting or banning the practice in specific product categories, requiring manufacturers to design for battery replaceability instead.

The term itself reflects the device's inevitable functional death once the battery expires, not any safety hazard to users. Recognition of suicide battery designs is important for procurement and total cost of ownership calculations, since the purchase price of the device must account for its finite lifespan and mandatory replacement rather than ongoing service and battery swaps.
