A summer tire is a pneumatic tire engineered to deliver maximum grip and tread life in temperatures above roughly 7 degrees Celsius. Unlike all-season or winter compounds, the rubber formulation hardens and loses elasticity in cold conditions, which is why summer tires become slippery on cold pavement and are unsafe below that threshold, regardless of whether snow or ice is present.

Summer tire compounds rely on softer synthetic and natural rubber blends that remain pliable in heat. The tread pattern is shallower and more closely spaced than winter or all-season designs, optimizing contact patch for dry braking and cornering. Sipe density (thin slits cut into the tread) is lower than winter tires because sipes are designed to shed water and grip ice, neither of which is the primary concern in summer use. The rubber's lower rolling resistance also improves fuel economy on warm pavement.

Performance grades vary widely. High-performance summer tires use even softer compounds and are rated for vehicles exceeding 160 km/h; they degrade faster but deliver superior handling. Touring summer tires prioritize longevity and quiet ride, often lasting 50,000 to 70,000 kilometers. Summer tires for economy vehicles typically balance cost, durability, and adequate grip at normal highway speeds.

The critical failure mode occurs when summer tires are driven on cold pavement. Below 7 degrees Celsius, the compound becomes rigid and loses micro-grip on the road surface, increasing stopping distance significantly. A summer tire on a cold, dry road can require 25 percent more distance to stop than the same tire at 20 degrees Celsius. Wet grip also deteriorates sharply in cold conditions because the hardened rubber cannot conform to the pavement texture.

Summer tires are standard equipment in Mediterranean, subtropical, and warm temperate climates with no prolonged winter. In continental regions with genuine winter seasons, summer tires are typically mounted April through September and swapped for winter tires when temperatures drop consistently below 7 degrees Celsius. Regulations in several jurisdictions require winter tires during specified winter months or when winter conditions are present, effectively prohibiting summer-only rubber during those periods.
