An intentional depression around a drain or scupper that promotes drainage.

A sump is a recessed basin or pit, typically 12 to 24 inches deep, built into a floor, roof, or ground level around a drain or scupper to collect water and direct it toward the outlet. Without a sump, water pools across a flat surface and finds its own path, often toward structural elements it should avoid. The depression concentrates flow and prevents standing water from spreading into adjacent areas.

In building construction, sumps appear most often in basements, crawlspaces, and mechanical rooms where groundwater seepage is expected. A typical basement sump might be a 2 by 3 foot pit sunk below floor level with a submersible pump installed inside; as water enters, the pump activates and expels it through a discharge line to daylight or a storm drain. On roofs and terraces, sumps are shallower depressions around roof drains, sloped gently inward to funnel water before it reaches the drain opening itself. This prevents debris and leaf matter from clogging the drain pipe immediately.

The depth and slope of a sump matter directly to its performance. Building codes typically require floor sumps in basements to extend at least 18 inches below the lowest floor level to ensure adequate water collection before a pump cycles on. The basin itself is usually lined with concrete or left in the soil if bedrock is stable. Without sufficient depth, water will saturate the surrounding soil and wick upward, defeating the purpose. A roof sump needs only 2 to 4 inches of fall over 10 feet of length to move water reliably; steeper slopes are not necessary and waste floor space.

Common failures and maintenance

Sumps fail when they become blocked by sediment, ice, or debris. A sump pump that runs continuously signals either a major water problem or a cracked discharge line leaking water back into the sump. Freezing is a hazard in cold climates: discharge pipes that exit above grade can ice over, backing up water into the sump and the space it serves. Proper pit sizing and pump capacity are sized to the expected inflow rate; undersizing the pump or sump basin forces water to rise faster than it can be expelled, flooding the adjacent floor or basement.

The term sump comes from the Dutch word somp, meaning swamp or marsh, and entered English construction vocabulary through Dutch and Flemish building traditions. In industrial and mining contexts, sumps serve similar functions: collecting oils, coolants, or process water at the lowest point of a workshop or mill floor, where a pump or operator can access and manage the accumulated liquid. The principle remains the same across trades: the sump is a deliberate sacrifice of small floor space to protect much larger areas from water damage.
