A wing wall is a masonry or concrete retaining structure built perpendicular or at an angle to a bridge abutment, extending outward from its face. Its primary function is to contain and support the fill material, soil, rock, or gravel, that backs the abutment on one or both sides. Without wing walls, this fill would slump or erode, undermining the bridge approach and destabilizing the entire structure.

Wing walls are typically constructed as vertical or near-vertical faces, often with a slight batter (backward slope) for stability. Heights range from 1 or 2 meters on modest structures to 10 meters or more on major bridges crossing deep ravines or over significant grade changes. They can be built from stone masonry, reinforced concrete, or gabions, depending on the load, site conditions, and budget. The choice of material affects both the retained height and the long-term maintenance requirements, especially in freeze-thaw or chemically aggressive environments.

The geometry of a wing wall varies considerably. Some are built flush with the abutment face, while others project from it at angles ranging from 45 degrees to perpendicular. The end condition also matters: a wing wall may terminate in a return wing (a short horizontal or sloped section) to better transition the fill, or it may simply end in a sloped fill face. Poor design of this transition can lead to uneven settlement and cracking where the wall ends.

Common failure modes and maintenance issues

Wing walls fail when drainage is inadequate. Hydrostatic pressure from water trapped behind the wall can exceed its capacity to resist lateral force, particularly if seepage paths allow ice lenses to form in cold climates. Differential settlement between the abutment and wing wall creates visible cracks and may eventually separate the two structures. Scour at the base, when a bridge crosses flowing water, can undermine the foundation. Regular inspection for cracks, spalling, and evidence of water seepage is essential.

The term "wing wall" reflects its literal role: it spreads outward like a wing from the central abutment, containing the fill and guiding approach fill safely into the structure. In older bridge work, wing walls are sometimes called abutment wings or flanking walls. Their design and specification are governed by the bridge's approach fill height, bearing capacity of the supporting soil, and anticipated surcharge loads from traffic or future construction.
