In typography and printing, a superior is any letter, numeral, or symbol positioned above the normal line of text and printed at a smaller size. The most common superiors are numerals used for footnote or endnote references, appearing as small raised 1, 2, 3 and so on. Chemical formulas also rely on superiors for exponents, as in H2O or E=mc2. Mathematical notation, trademark symbols, ordinal indicators like 1st or 2nd, and registered trademark circles all employ the superior position.

Superiors are distinct from subscripts, which sit below the baseline and serve different typographic functions. The vertical positioning and reduced size of a superior are critical to legibility; if too large or positioned incorrectly, they disrupt text flow and appear amateurish. In metal type, superiors were cast as separate sorts on bodies slightly raised above normal type height. Digital typography achieves the effect through font programming, typically reducing the character to 50 to 70 percent of the body size and raising it by a fixed amount.

Production and technical control

In offset printing and digital output, superior placement depends on accurate font metrics and proper markup. Many fonts include prebuilt superior characters that maintain consistent sizing and positioning. When a font lacks native superiors, printers must either use keystroke commands to artificially raise and shrink characters, a method that can produce inconsistent results, or substitute using specially designed superior fonts. Incorrect handling causes superiors to appear too large, too small, misaligned, or at the wrong vertical height, problems that compound across a print run.

Historically, typesetting for footnotes and scientific material required the compositor to manually select superior sorts, a labor-intensive step that increased production time and opportunity for error. Modern page layout software largely automates this process, yet legacy documents and specialized typesetting still demand careful attention to superior character rendering, particularly in technical manuals, pharmaceutical packaging, and academic publications where precision matters.
