A mark made on the moulds of a ship to show where the angles of the timbers are to be placed.

A surmark is a scored or incised line marked onto a wooden mould used in shipbuilding to indicate the precise position where a timber's angle or edge must sit. These marks transfer the geometry of the hull design directly onto the wooden patterns that shipwrights use to shape the actual structural timbers. The surmark ensures that each timber is cut to match the hull curve at its intended location, so that when the timber is fitted into the frame, its grain orientation and angle align with the ship's structural demands.

Shipbuilders work from a lofting floor where the hull lines are drawn full-size. From these lines, wooden moulds are created for each principal section or frame. A surmark is typically made by scoring the mould with a chisel, saw, or marking knife at the exact angle where the timber's face must align. Different timbers, such as floors, futtocks, and stringers, each require surmarks positioned according to their function and the local curvature of the hull. The mark serves as both a visual guide and a mechanical stop against which the timber can be tested during fabrication.

The depth and clarity of the surmark are critical. A shallow or poorly positioned surmark leads to timber that does not seat properly in the frame, creating gaps, weakness, or the need for costly refitting. Traditional shipwrights developed keen judgment for reading surmarks, using them as benchmarks to confirm that their timber had been shaped correctly before assembly. In wooden ship construction, where precision depends on human judgment and handwork, the surmark was an essential quality control reference.

The term reflects the practical language of shipbuilding trades. "Sur" derives from the French sur, meaning on or upon, and "mark" is simply the incised or scored line itself. The word is largely historical; it belonged to the age of wooden shipbuilding and mould-lofting practices. Modern shipbuilding, whether wooden restoration or industrial production, has largely replaced hand-marked moulds with digital templates, CAD-derived patterns, and CNC-cut components, making the surmark itself obsolete as a working tool.
