A swelly is a localized thickening or bulge in a coal seam, where the coal band increases in thickness well above its normal working height. Instead of a consistent seam, miners encounter a swollen section that may double or triple the usual thickness over a limited lateral distance. This irregular geometry creates immediate practical problems: the thickened coal is harder to extract efficiently, roof support becomes unpredictable, and equipment settings must be adjusted mid-face.
Swellies occur due to geological variations in depositional conditions millions of years ago. They can form where settling rates changed, where sediment was redistributed by ancient water movement, or where subsidence created local accumulation zones. A seam might run at 1.2 meters thick for hundreds of meters, then suddenly swell to 2.5 or 3 meters over a 20 or 30 meter stretch before returning to normal thickness. Some swellies are predictable from geological mapping; others emerge unexpectedly during extraction.
The extraction challenge depends on the seam's access method. In underground longwall or room-and-pillar operations, a swelly forces operators to manage a higher volume of coal, roof, and spoil in a confined space. Conveyor systems may struggle with the surge in throughput. In opencast or surface mining, a swelly simply means more overburden and coal must be moved to access the seam beyond it, reducing the operating ratio (waste to ore). Roof support design becomes critical: the swollen section carries more weight and requires heavier or more frequent propping.
The term comes from the ordinary sense of swelling or bulging, and is primarily British and Australian mining vocabulary. American operations more often use neutral descriptions like thick section or pinch-out anomaly, depending on context. Historically, swellies were identified by physical boring and core sampling before mechanized extraction; today, seismic surveys and 3D geological modeling often predict their location and extent, though verification in the working face remains essential.
Swellies are not faults or structural failures; they are simple variations in coal thickness that reflect the seam's original deposition. They differ from rolls (where the seam dips sharply up and down) and from washouts (where the seam is thinned or absent due to later erosion). A swelly is surplus coal in the target seam, not a defect, but it still demands planning and adjustment from mine operators.
