sweeten: neutralize acidic soil with alkali

In field agriculture, sweetening means raising soil pH by applying alkaline material, most commonly ground limestone (calcium carbonate) or hydrated lime (calcium hydroxide). Acidic soils, with pH below 6.5, inhibit nutrient uptake and favour harmful pathogens and aluminium toxicity; sweetening corrects this chemical condition to make the soil hospitable to most crops.

The standard material is agricultural limestone, applied at rates of 1 to 5 tons per acre depending on soil pH and texture. Clay soils require more limestone than sandy soils to achieve the same pH shift because clays have higher buffering capacity. Application is mechanical: spreaders, either ground-driven or PTO-driven from a tractor, distribute the ground limestone evenly across the field. The material must be worked into the soil by ploughing or discing to increase contact with acid particles and accelerate reaction.

Hydrated lime works faster than ground limestone because it is more soluble, raising pH within weeks rather than months; however it is caustic, more expensive, and used mainly on small areas or when rapid correction is needed. Wood ash and slag from steel mills are alternative but less predictable sources of alkali. Dolomitic limestone contains both calcium and magnesium carbonate, and is chosen when magnesium deficiency is also present.

The term sweeten comes from folk usage: farmers described acidic soils as sour and alkaline soils as sweet, reflecting taste tests that are now obsolete but remain in the vocabulary. The practice is routine in regions with high rainfall, where natural leaching depletes soil bases. Sweetening must be timed: application 3 to 6 months before planting allows the limestone to react; applying it too close to planting wastes material because the reaction is incomplete.

Over-sweetening is possible and damaging; soils above pH 7.5 lock up micronutrients like iron, zinc, and manganese, creating deficiency symptoms despite adequate soil content. Soil testing is essential. A proper sweetening programme follows soil test results and adjusts application rates to the target pH and soil type, avoiding both acidity and excess alkalinity.
