A tender is a specialized railroad car permanently coupled behind a steam locomotive. Its sole function is to supply the engine with the two resources it consumes at scale: water for the boiler and fuel (coal, oil, or wood) for the firebox. Without a tender, a steam locomotive cannot run more than a few miles before exhaustion.
The tender's design depends on the locomotive class and fuel type. Coal tenders typically feature a sloped coal bunker above the frame, with gravity-fed chutes to the firebox. The water tank spans nearly the full length of the car and holds between 5,000 and 12,000 gallons, depending on the engine's boiler size. Oil-burning locomotives use smaller water tanks paired with fuel tanks that sit low beneath the frame to maintain a center of gravity. The tender sits on two or four axles; larger engines pull six-axle tenders that weigh 40 to 60 tons when full.
The tender connects to the locomotive via a hinged draw bar with a screw coupling, allowing some vertical play while transmitting pulling force. A small cab or shelter may sit atop the coal bunker or behind the water tank, giving the fireman and coal passer a modest refuge from the elements. Steam and brake lines run beneath the frame to couple the tender's brakes and steam-operated equipment (such as the coal pusher) to the engine's systems.
Operators and crews must manage tender supply with precision. On long routes without water stations or coaling docks, tender capacity becomes the limiting factor for range. Underestimating consumption can strand a train; carrying excess weight wastes fuel and strains the engine. The fireman spends much of his shift monitoring water level via sight glasses and regulating the stoker or shovel feeding, making the tender interface critical to locomotive performance.
The name tender derives from the verb to tend: the car tends to the engine's needs. In earlier rail parlance, the term sometimes referred to auxiliary cars serving other purposes, but by the twentieth century it was reserved exclusively for fuel and water supply. The tender is as inseparable from steam-era railroading as the locomotive itself; together they formed a single thermal engine that pushed freight and passengers across continents.
