Tesla-swap: dropping a salvaged EV motor into a gas car

A Tesla-swap means gutting a conventional gasoline vehicle and installing an electric motor, inverter, and battery pack sourced from a Tesla. The work involves removing the internal combustion engine, fuel tank, transmission, and exhaust system, then fabricating motor mounts and adapting the drivetrain to mate with the existing chassis and suspension. What remains is a functional electric car built on a chassis that was never engineered for the thermal or weight distribution of battery pack placement.

The appeal lies in economics and availability. Salvaged Tesla powertrains from accident-damaged vehicles or battery-degraded cars cost far less than purpose-built EV conversions. A used Tesla Model 3 or Model S motor and pack can be harvested and repurposed, especially as parts availability has improved through the used EV market. Enthusiasts and small shops perform these conversions on vintage muscle cars, pickup trucks, and economy sedans, transforming them into surprisingly quick electric vehicles with minimal development cost compared to engineering a bespoke conversion.

Technical challenges and compromises

The core problem is mismatch. Tesla powertrains were designed as systems: the motor, inverter, cooling loops, and battery management electronics communicate through Tesla's proprietary architecture. Separating these components and integrating them into a non-Tesla vehicle requires custom wiring harnesses, adapted control interfaces, and often reverse-engineered logic to handle functions like regenerative braking, thermal management, and high-voltage safety interlocks. The weight distribution changes dramatically when a 400-pound battery pack replaces a 300-pound engine and fuel system, affecting handling, braking balance, and ride height.

Practical issues emerge quickly. Cooling the motor and power electronics in a car not designed for electric thermal loads causes overheating on sustained driving. Battery charging requires either a dedicated inlet retrofit or reliance on a slow trickle charger. Crash safety is unknown: the original vehicle's crumple zones and structural reinforcement were not validated with concentrated battery mass in a new location. Insurance typically refuses to cover swapped vehicles, and registration can be difficult or impossible depending on jurisdiction, as the result does not conform to any manufacturer's original specifications.

The term itself emerged from enthusiast forums around 2010-2015 as salvaged Tesla parts became available and the community shared conversion methods. It is distinct from OEM electrification programs or professional EV conversion services, which use engineered platforms and documented drivetrains. A Tesla-swap is fundamentally a hands-on adaptation, more akin to hot-rodding than manufacturing, and remains illegal or unregistered in most places despite its growing presence in the DIY EV conversion scene.
