A bigger engine is better.

This is the mechanic's reminder that raw engine size, measured in cubic centimeters or cubic inches of cylinder volume, beats most other upgrades. A 500 cc engine will move more air and fuel per revolution than a 300 cc engine running the same RPM. That physical fact of displacement creates more power potential, and no amount of tuning, fuel additives, or electronic management can fully close the gap.

The phrase echoes across garages, dyno shops, and racing paddocks because it captures something true about thermodynamics and physics. Two engines making identical power might be matched, but the larger one does it at lower RPM, producing more torque and heat margin. A four-cylinder with 2.0 liters of displacement will punch harder than a 1.6 liter version of the same design, all else equal. Bolt-on parts like intake manifolds or turbochargers help a lot, but they work within the constraints of the base engine's swept volume.

Where displacement falls short

Modern fuel injection and variable valve timing have narrowed the advantage. A 1400 cc four-cylinder engine today can deliver power numbers that would have required 1800 cc thirty years ago. Efficiency gained through higher compression ratios, lighter internals, and precise fuel metering changes the math. The phrase remains true in spirit, bigger is still better, but the practical margin has shrunk.

The saying holds strongest in naturally aspirated engines and in drag racing, where RPM is not limited and sustained power matters. In turbocharged or supercharged applications, a smaller displacement engine forced with boost can match or exceed a larger naturally aspirated one. Street driving, where engines spend time at part throttle and lower revs, makes displacement less decisive. Still, a customer choosing between a 2.0 and a 2.4 liter version of the same engine line will almost always get the larger one for everyday driving confidence.

The phrase is not an argument against engineering or tuning; it is simply a statement that the foundation matters most. A poorly built big engine will lose to a well-built small one. But a well-built big engine is the safest bet, which is why manufacturers offer displacement as a spec sheet highlight and why used car buyers fixate on it when engine detail is all they can see.
