In carpentry, the toe is the longer of the two edges created when you make a crosscut at an angle through a board. When a saw blade cuts through at anything other than 90 degrees to the face, it creates two different edge lengths: a shorter edge on one side (the heel) and a longer edge on the opposite side (the toe). The difference in length depends on the angle of the cut and the thickness of the board. Understanding which edge is which matters for layout, joinery, and fitting parts together.

The term derives from the angled shape itself: if you imagine the cut as a foot, the toe points in the direction the angle opens toward, just as your actual toe extends from the ball of your foot. The heel is the short back edge, mirroring the anatomy. This naming convention has stuck because it creates a mental model carpenters can visualize quickly on the job.

Practical use and common angles

Angled crosscuts appear most often in framing (rafter cuts, bird's mouths, plumb cuts) and in joinery (bevels for panel frames, chamfers on edges). A 45-degree bevel produces a toe and heel of equal length in a single thickness, but compound angles or thicker stock make the difference more pronounced. When you're fitting a rafter to a wall plate, the toe of the cut must land cleanly on the bearing surface, so knowing which edge is long enough to sit flush is essential before assembly.

Mistakes happen when carpenters orient a cut backwards: if you cut from the wrong face or measure the toe length by the heel instead, parts won't fit. Chalking the toe before test-fitting it to a mating surface is a common check. On gang cuts (multiple identical pieces), marking the toe clearly on the template prevents repetitive errors.
