A tool-rest is a rigid support mounted on a lathe or similar rotary machine that holds the cutting tool at the correct height, angle, and distance from the spinning workpiece. Its primary job is simple but critical: keep the tool stable and positioned precisely so the cut is clean and predictable. Without it, the tool would chatter, deflect, or dig in unpredictably, ruining both the workpiece and potentially the tool itself.

On a lathe, the tool-rest typically bolts to the carriage or to a dedicated rest base that slides along the ways. It consists of a flat or slightly crowned top surface, usually made of cast iron or ductile iron, where the tool shank rests. The height of this surface relative to the spindle centerline determines the cutting geometry; for most turning operations, the tool sits at centerline height to minimize rubbing and chatter. Adjustable tool-rests allow the operator to shift the rest up or down on its post to compensate for tool wear or changes in cutting depth.

Different turning tasks demand different rest shapes. A straight rest works for general facing and turning. A left-hand or right-hand rest angles the top surface to support tools used for chamfering or cutting shoulders. A follower rest (or steadying rest) has a curved top and follows the workpiece profile as it rotates, supporting long, slender work that would otherwise deflect. A parting tool rest is narrow and specifically designed to back up the blade used for cutoff operations, where rigidity is paramount.

Common problems and maintenance

The tool-rest surface wears gradually from repeated tool contact and sliding friction. A worn or uneven top develops grooves and high spots that cause chatter and inconsistent height. Regular cleaning of chips and coolant buildup prevents corrosion and allows accurate positioning. Many operators periodically file or grind the rest surface flat. If the rest is loose or the mounting bolts are slack, tool movement becomes severe; a quick check of fasteners before starting work is routine maintenance.

The term "tool-rest" appears in lathes, grinders, and some milling setups anywhere a single-point tool needs support. The name is straightforward: it is literally where the tool rests. In bench-mounted grinders, the tool-rest is often an adjustable bracket that prevents the user's hands from approaching the rotating wheel and supports small pieces for sharpening. Proper setup and maintenance of the tool-rest is one of the first things taught to lathe operators because its quality directly affects the quality and safety of the work.
