A system of telephone dialing in which each digit is transmitted as a tone or combination of tones of specific pitch.

Touch-tone dialing transmits telephone digits as audible tones rather than as the mechanical pulses used in rotary dialing. When you press a button on a push-button telephone keypad, it generates two simultaneous sine-wave tones, one from a low frequency group and one from a high frequency group. This dual-tone multi-frequency (DTMF) method allowed the telephone network to read digits faster and more reliably than the older pulse-count system, where each digit required a series of brief dial breaks.
The standard touch-tone pad uses a 4 by 3 matrix. Rows represent low frequencies: 697 Hz, 770 Hz, 852 Hz, and 941 Hz. Columns represent high frequencies: 1209 Hz, 1336 Hz, and 1477 Hz. Pressing the 5 button, for example, generates 770 Hz plus 1336 Hz simultaneously. The digits 0 through 9 occupy the first three columns, while the fourth column (1633 Hz) was reserved for telephone company signaling in some systems. This frequency spacing ensures tones are far enough apart that even poor line quality or slight distortion cannot cause misidentification.
Advantages and adoption
Touch-tone dialing is faster than rotary dialing because all information transmits in parallel as simultaneous tones, rather than sequentially as individual pulses. A 10-digit number could be entered in under two seconds instead of up to four seconds. The method also proved more compatible with computerized switching equipment and early automated systems. The Bell System introduced touch-tone service in 1963, though it took years to become standard as exchanges upgraded their equipment.
Beyond simple digit transmission, DTMF enabled in-band signaling for telephone company applications: automated switching, recording equipment control, and interactive voice response systems. A caller pressing a button during a recorded message could instruct the system to take an action, making DTMF the foundation for automated customer service before voice recognition became practical.
The term tone dialing is often used interchangeably with touch-tone, though touch-tone was originally a Bell System trademark. Modern Voice over IP systems still recognize DTMF tones, though the underlying mechanism is now digital rather than analog. Defects in DTMF generation, such as unequal tone amplitudes or frequency drift, can cause misdialing on noisy lines or with systems that apply strict validation.
