A traffic island is a physical or marked zone within a roadway, typically circular or oval, that separates opposing or merging traffic flows and creates a protected waiting space for pedestrians mid-crossing. Islands range from small painted areas a few metres across to substantial raised structures occupying 20 square metres or more. They are a core tool in intersection design, forcing vehicles into defined paths while giving foot traffic a safe staging point to cross in two separate phases rather than one continuous exposure.

Islands come in three main variants. Painted islands are simply marked in thermoplastic or paint and offer no physical barrier; drivers rely on line discipline, and they provide minimal protection in high-speed environments. Kerbed islands have raised edges of 75 to 150 mm that channel traffic and clearly establish the boundary; these are standard in urban areas with moderate speeds. Bollarded islands use low posts or chains and suit temporary or low-traffic situations. Material choice matters: porous asphalt or permeable paving allows drainage; concrete kerbs resist vehicle impact better than bitumen.

The island's geometry dictates traffic behaviour. A tight radius corner forces vehicles to slow and turn carefully; a swept radius of 6 to 10 metres is typical for urban streets. The island width perpendicular to crossing affects pedestrian refuge time; 2 metres is considered the minimum for safe waiting, though 3 to 4 metres is preferred in high-volume pedestrian zones. Sight lines from the island must allow pedestrians to see approaching traffic and drivers to spot waiting pedestrians, typically requiring clear zones 1 to 1.5 metres back from the kerb.

Hazards and maintenance

Poorly maintained islands become liabilities. Cracked or deteriorating kerbs can catch bicycle wheels or fail to stop a skidding vehicle; regular inspection and repair of surface defects is essential. Vegetation overgrowth obstructs sightlines and creates standing water that hastens asphalt breakdown. Snow and ice accumulation in northern climates transforms islands into hazards for pedestrians and can trap bicycles. Mounting damage from repeated vehicle strikes requires reinforcement or redesign of the island perimeter or traffic signal timing to reduce conflict frequency.

Traffic islands sit between two engineering philosophies. In older city planning, they manage intersection capacity and protect pedestrians from high-speed through traffic. In contemporary practice, particularly in Europe and Australasia, islands are one element of traffic calming strategies that deliberately slow vehicles and prioritise pedestrian comfort over throughput. A road with multiple small islands and tight turning radii discourages speeding even when no explicit speed limit is posted. Islands also serve drainage and utility purposes: a raised island can conceal a storm water inlet or utility duct while allowing inspection access.
