Transmission fluid is a mineral or synthetic oil formulated to lubricate, cool, and protect the internal components of a vehicle's transmission while also serving as the hydraulic medium that transfers power between the engine and wheels. In manual transmissions it flows between gears and synchronizers; in automatic and continuously variable transmissions it is the working fluid itself, pressurized to engage clutches and apply bands that select gear ratios.
The fluid must perform multiple contradictory tasks simultaneously. It must remain thin enough to flow freely at cold start, typically around ISO VG 32 to VG 46 in mineral form, while maintaining film strength at the extreme pressures and temperatures where gear teeth mesh, often exceeding 150 degrees Celsius in heavy use. Automatic transmission fluids (ATF) carry the greatest load since they must cushion the engagement of friction elements without slipping excessively, requiring carefully balanced friction modifiers, viscosity improvers, and anti-wear additives. Manual transmission oil operates at lower pressures and temperatures but still needs strong EP (extreme pressure) additives to protect hypoid gears in differentials.
Fluid Types and Specifications
Transmission fluids are classified by viscosity grade, additive package, and sometimes color coding tied to original equipment manufacturer (OEM) specifications. Dexron, Mercon, and Type F are common automotive classifications; industrial gearboxes use ISO VG 32, 46, or 68 depending on operating speed and load. Many manufacturers now specify synthetic fluids with longer drain intervals, often 100,000 miles or more compared to 30,000 to 60,000 for conventional fluids. The wrong fluid type can cause slipping, overheating, foam formation, or accelerated wear of clutches and seals.
Degradation is the primary failure mode. Over time, friction modifiers break down, anti-wear additives deplete, oxidation thickens the fluid, and wear particles accumulate, all reducing lubricating film strength and hydraulic responsiveness. Metal shavings from gear wear, friction dust from band engagement, and water ingress from condensation further compromise fluid condition. This is why transmission fluid requires periodic inspection or replacement based on mileage, time, or fluid analysis; delaying service can allow internal corrosion and gear pitting to advance beyond repair.
The term itself reflects the fluid's primary role as the medium through which a transmission operates, distinct from engine oil which lubricated reciprocating engines or gear oil which lubricates passive gearboxes. In the industrial context, the distinction matters because gearbox oils rated for static gearboxes lack the friction modifiers and extreme-pressure chemistry needed for wet clutch engagement or variable-displacement pump systems found in mobile and off-highway equipment transmissions.
