A trip meter is a secondary distance counter built into or paired with a vehicle's odometer. Unlike the main odometer, which records total miles or kilometers from new and cannot be reset, the trip meter can be zeroed by the driver to measure distance over a specific journey. Most vehicles have at least one trip meter, often labeled "Trip A" or "Trip B" to allow tracking of multiple separate routes without losing data.
The trip meter works mechanically or electronically depending on the vehicle's instrumentation. On older analog dashboards, a mechanical trip meter uses geared wheels that increment as the vehicle moves, with a reset button or lever to return the display to zero. Modern vehicles use electronic trip meters that integrate with the speedometer sensor or wheel speed sensors, displaying distance on a digital cluster. The precision is identical to the main odometer, typically accurate to 0.1 miles or 0.1 kilometers.
Trip meters serve practical daily functions: drivers use them to verify fuel consumption over known distances, track mileage for a specific errand or journey segment, monitor distance between service intervals, or verify route accuracy against GPS. In fleet operations, trip meters help drivers document business-use mileage separately from personal use. Some vehicles allow multiple independent trip meter readings to be stored simultaneously, with the ability to switch between displays without losing prior data.
The difference between trip meter and odometer is critical for record-keeping. The odometer cannot be reset and serves as the legal record of vehicle use for warranty, insurance, and resale value; tampering with it is fraud in most jurisdictions. The trip meter has no legal standing and is purely informational, making it safe and intended for driver reference only. A malfunctioning trip meter does not affect vehicle registration or compliance, whereas a faulty main odometer is a serious concern.
The term itself reflects the meter's purpose: "trip" refers to a single journey or short segment, and "meter" denotes measurement. The feature has appeared on passenger vehicles since the mid-20th century, becoming nearly universal by the 1970s. It remains one of the most frequently used instruments in daily driving, making it one of the few dashboard functions that survives unchanged in function across mechanical, analog electronic, and digital instrument clusters.
