To break a circuit in response to an overload.
trip out: automatic circuit shutdown under fault
When a circuit breaker or protective relay detects current, voltage, or frequency outside safe operating limits, it trips out: it opens the circuit contacts and cuts power flow instantly. This is a forced interruption, not a gradual reduction. The device springs open mechanically or electromagnetically, breaking the connection between supply and load regardless of whether anyone has pressed a button.
Trip mechanisms respond to different fault conditions. Thermal overload elements respond to sustained overcurrent by heating a bimetallic strip until it bends and releases a latch, typically after several seconds. Magnetic coils respond instantaneously to very high currents (short circuits), pulling an armature that trips the contacts open. Modern electronic relays in transmission and distribution systems detect imbalances in phase currents, voltage sags, frequency deviations, and ground faults, sending a signal to trip the circuit breaker within milliseconds.
Why circuits trip and what goes wrong
A circuit trips when its protection scheme detects a fault: a short circuit where phase and neutral conductors touch, a ground fault where current leaks to earth, or sustained overcurrent from an undersized or failing load. Tripping is the correct response. If a breaker will not trip when it should, dangerous energy remains in the faulted circuit, risking fire, shock, or equipment damage. If a breaker trips repeatedly under normal load, the circuit is overloaded or the breaker itself is faulty and must be investigated and replaced, not bypassed.
In three-phase distribution systems, three-phase breakers and relays trip all three poles simultaneously to isolate the fault completely. This prevents single phasing, a condition where one phase is lost and remaining phases drive motor loads at low efficiency and high temperature. High voltage transmission networks use distance relays that trip main breakers and then, if the fault persists, trigger a controlled loss of load or opening of neighbouring circuits to isolate the damaged section.
The term originated from the physical action of the tripping mechanism, originally a mechanical catch or latch that when released would allow the breaker's spring or weight to snap the contacts open. In modern usage, trip out is both noun and verb: a relay can experience a nuisance trip (false operation), operators may trip out a line intentionally for maintenance, and protection engineers set trip thresholds (pickup values) according to the circuit and load characteristics.
