In logistics and transport operations, a turning point is a physical location where vehicles shift their heading to a new compass bearing or route segment. This differs from a simple waypoint: a turning point involves an actual directional change of at least 45 degrees, significant enough to affect fuel consumption, tire wear, braking stress, and driver workload. On mapped routes, turning points mark the vertices where one leg meets another.

Turning points fall into distinct categories by context. In road transport, they occur at intersections, roundabouts, or designated pull-out zones on long-haul routes. In maritime logistics, they are ocean waypoints where a vessel alters course to avoid weather, shallow water, or commercial shipping lanes. In rail operations, turning points are rare since tracks fix direction, but sidings and switches serve analogous purposes for switching trains between lines.

Operational and cost implications

Each turning point introduces operational friction. At the point itself, drivers must decelerate, assess conditions, execute the maneuver, and re-accelerate. For heavy vehicles like articulated trucks, tight turning points demand precision: a 90-degree turn at speed risks rollover or jackknifing. GPS routing software prioritizes routes with fewer, gentler turning points because they reduce journey time by 5 to 15 percent and lower fuel costs proportionally. Narrow urban streets with frequent 45-degree turns are less efficient than arterial roads with fewer, wider-radius turns.

Turning points also concentrate maintenance costs. Repeated hard braking at the same location causes accelerated brake pad wear and tire scrubbing. In warehousing, heavy equipment like forklifts performing repetitive 90-degree turns within aisles experience faster hydraulic and drivetrain degradation. Logistics planners often request route modifications to reduce the number of turning points per journey or to favor locations with larger turning radii.

The term itself originates from everyday navigation language but took on technical precision in the transport sector during the rise of computer-aided dispatch in the 1990s. Modern telematics systems log every turning point, recording speed, lateral acceleration, and time spent, allowing fleet managers to identify inefficient routes and driver behavior patterns at specific points on the network.
