An alloy of copper, antimony, zinc and tin patented in 1770 by William Tutin, whose firm used it in commercial production of housewares.

Tutania: britannia metal's predecessor, now mostly history

Tutania is a copper-based alloy developed in the late 18th century, composed of copper, antimony, zinc, and tin in varying proportions. The exact recipe differed between makers, but a typical formulation ran approximately 80 percent copper, 10 percent antimony, 5 percent zinc, and 5 percent tin. It was designed to produce tableware and decorative metalware that resembled silver in appearance while remaining affordable to manufacture and purchase. The alloy could be cast, planished, and polished to a lustrous finish suitable for domestic and commercial use.

William Tutin, a Birmingham metalworker, patented the formula in 1770 and his firm manufactured it commercially throughout the late 1700s. The name Tutania derives directly from his surname. The alloy proved popular enough that it entered regular trade vocabulary and was marketed under that proprietary name for several decades. Competitors in the metalware industry copied the formulation but could not use the Tutania trademark once it was registered.

Tutania versus Britannia Metal

Tutania was eventually superseded by Britannia metal, which emerged in the 1790s and achieved far wider commercial adoption. Britannia metal replaced copper with tin as the dominant element, typically comprising 90 percent tin, 7 percent copper, and 3 percent antimony or bismuth. Britannia metal was harder, more durable, and did not tarnish as readily. It also performed better when electroplated with silver, which became standard practice in the 19th century. These advantages made Britannia metal the industrial standard for affordable flatware and hollow ware production.

Once Britannia metal dominated the market, Tutania production declined sharply. By the mid-1800s, the term had largely vanished from manufacturing specifications and commercial catalogues. Today, Tutania survives mainly as a historical footnote in metallurgy and antiques literature, occasionally encountered in museum collections of 18th-century tableware or in the technical records of early Birmingham metalware firms.

Identification of Tutania pieces is difficult without documentary evidence, since the alloy closely resembles both contemporary pewter and early Britannia metal to the naked eye. Analysis of composition requires chemical testing. Tutania items that have survived typically show the dark tarnishing characteristic of copper-rich alloys when exposed to air and moisture over centuries. Collectors value authentic Tutania pieces primarily for their rarity and historical significance as markers of early industrial metalware production in Britain.
