tympan

A piece of cloth padding placed under the platen of a letterpress to distribute the pressure on the sheet being printed.

tympan: the cushion between platen and paper

The tympan is a resilient pad assembly mounted directly under the platen of a letterpress, sandwiched between the platen and the paper being printed. Its job is to absorb and redistribute the crushing force of the platen as it descends, ensuring even pressure across the entire printed surface. Without it, the platen would strike the paper with concentrated, uneven force, causing embossing, ink transfer problems, and torn sheets.

A traditional tympan consists of two layers: a base layer of resilient material (historically parchment or treated paper, now often rubber or synthetic composites) glued to a backing sheet. The whole assembly is hinged or hinged-and-pinned to the press frame so it can be swung away when loading new paper and returned into position before printing. The thickness typically ranges from 0.125 to 0.25 inches depending on the press tonnage and stock being printed.

The working surface must be dressed to stay effective. Ink, paper fibers, and debris accumulate on the tympan face over long runs, creating a tacky, uneven surface that causes picking (fibers torn from the paper) and uneven impression. Pressworkers periodically clean the tympan with solvent and may resurface it by gluing on a fresh overlay of material, or in some cases by feeding a thin sacrificial tissue sheet under it to present a clean surface. A worn or improperly seated tympan produces the telltale pattern of pressure variation across the printed area.

The name derives from the Latin tympanum, meaning a drum-like membrane stretched under tension, which loosely describes its function as a shock-absorbing intermediary. The term has remained standard in the printing trade for over a century, even as materials and press designs evolved.

Tympan performance directly affects print quality and paper waste. Too soft a tympan produces excessive embossing and poor ink density; too hard or worn one causes impression variations and damage to delicate stocks. On large format presses or when printing fine art editions, the tympan is treated almost as a consumable maintenance item, replaced or resurfaced regularly to maintain consistency. Digital presses and modern offset equipment use different impression systems, so the traditional tympan is found primarily in surviving letterpress shops, small foundry operations, and specialty printing studios.
