Typometry is the practice of rendering cartographic or technical drawings using moveable metal type and ornamental rules, rather than engraving or lithography. The printer arranges individual sorts, slugs, and decorative borders to build up lines, shapes, and text directly on the composing stone or bed, creating a complete image that can then be printed. This method was most common in the nineteenth century, particularly for railway maps, statistical diagrams, and small-format schematic drawings where the precision of engraving was unnecessary but the speed and flexibility of type composition offered practical advantage.
The technique relies on the same foundational tool as letterpress printing: the type case, composing stick, and galley. A compositor builds the map by setting type vertically, horizontally, and at angles, using thin metal rules, border ornaments, and sometimes cast geometric shapes to define boundaries, grids, and decorative frames. Numbers, letters, and symbols fill in labels, coordinates, and reference marks. The entire assembled forme is locked tight in a chase and printed as a single pull, making corrections or amendments laborious since any change requires partial or complete disassembly.
Typometry worked best for maps with sparse detail, clear geometric structure, or predominantly textual content. A railway route map showing stations and junction names was well suited to the method; a topographic map with contour lines and shaded terrain was not. The quality of the resulting image depended entirely on the printer's spatial reasoning and the uniformity of type height and rule thickness. Uneven baseline, misaligned rules, or type that sat too high or low in the forme would produce a blurred or broken line on the printed sheet.
Why the name and its decline
The term combines typo, meaning type, with the suffix -metry, denoting measurement or description by line and form. It was never a mainstream method and the name itself appears rarely in historical printing literature, suggesting it remained a specialized vernacular term among compositors rather than an industry standard. The rise of photoengraving and later photolithography in the late nineteenth century made typometry obsolete; these photomechanical processes were faster, more accurate, and required no skilled hand composition for complex graphic work.
Typometry survives now only in historical examples and in the work of contemporary letterpress practitioners who occasionally revive it as an experimental or artistic technique. It remains a vivid example of how printers adapted existing tools to new problems before the mechanization of typesetting and the chemical reproduction of images superseded manual composition entirely.
