A board that lies beneath something.

underboard: structural base layer under flooring or cladding

An underboard is a structural panel or sheet material installed beneath a finished surface, typically flooring or wall cladding, to provide a stable base, distribute loads, and manage moisture. It sits between the structural framing and the final wearing surface, absorbing mechanical and environmental stress that would otherwise reach the finished layer.

In timber-frame construction, underboards are commonly oriented strand board (OSB) or plywood sheets laid over floor joists or roof trusses before the final flooring or shingles are applied. Thickness typically ranges from 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch, depending on joist spacing and intended load. In wet areas like kitchens and bathrooms, cement board or moisture-resistant gypsum board serves as the underboard beneath tile, preventing water damage to the framing beneath. For wall cladding, builders may install sheathing board as an underboard before hanging brick veneer or cladding panels.

The underboard's primary job is dimensional stability. Wood-based underboards swell and shrink with humidity changes; a well-installed underboard accommodates this movement while resisting telegraphing, where surface irregularities in the base layer create visible bumps or waves in the finished floor or wall. It also acts as a load distributor, spreading concentrated point loads across a wider framing area, reducing stress on individual joists or studs. In some applications, underboard provides acoustic dampening or thermal resistance.

Failure modes include buckling when boards are installed too tightly without expansion gaps, moisture damage when water-sensitive materials are used in damp locations, and delamination if adhesives fail or excess moisture causes the layers to separate. Telegraph-through occurs when fasteners or substrate defects show through the finished surface, a particular risk with thin flooring materials like vinyl or ceramic tile.

The term "underboard" is sometimes used interchangeably with underlayment or substrate, though underlayment more often refers to thin resilient sheets while substrate is the broader architectural term. In flooring trades, the underboard is distinct from the subfloor (the structural decking directly over joists) and the finished floor (the wearing surface).
