The state of being insufficiently fired or underfired.
underfiring: when ceramic heat treatment stops too early
Underfiring occurs when a ceramic piece fails to reach the temperature or duration needed for complete vitrification or sintering. The material remains porous, weak, and often chalky or dusty on the surface. In practical terms, you end up with ware that will absorb water, chip easily, and craze or crack during use or storage. The glaze, if applied, may not have fused properly to the body, and bare clay may still powder away when rubbed.
The phenomenon sits on a spectrum. A piece fired to cone 5 when the recipe calls for cone 6 might pass casual inspection but fail in the dishwasher. Severe underfiring, such as ware that spent only half its intended time in the kiln, becomes almost friable. Porcelain is less forgiving than stoneware; it needs full maturation to develop strength. Earthenware can tolerate slightly lower firing, but even there, adequate heat is non-negotiable for food-safe functional ware.
Underfiring stems from kiln malfunction, thermocouple failure, fuel supply interruption, or human error in setting firing schedules. Kiln atmosphere also matters: a reducing fire needs time to develop properly, and premature cooling traps the piece in a partially transformed state. Detection is straightforward in the studio: the break edge looks grainy rather than glassy, a water-absorption test shows the body drinking quickly, and a scratch test reveals a powdery surface layer. Fired test tiles are the reference standard for quality control.
The term is old and universal in ceramics. It is the opposite of overfiring, which causes bloating, warping, and glaze running. Underfired ware is economically worthless in production work because no secondary glazing or refiring reliably recovers it. Once the piece has cooled, the window to complete maturation has closed. Discarding and starting again is the only option.
