An underfired ceramic body has been heated to a temperature below the point needed for complete vitrification and densification. This leaves the material porous, weak, and friable, with a dull or chalky surface. The glaze, if applied, may appear matte and scratchy rather than glossy, and adhesion to the body is often poor. Underfiring occurs across all ceramic disciplines: earthenware, stoneware, porcelain, and technical ceramics.
The threshold temperature varies sharply by clay composition and glaze formulation. A stoneware body designed to mature at 1260°C will show underfired characteristics if fired only to 1100°C. Earthenware typically requires 1060 to 1150°C; porcelain needs 1200 to 1450°C depending on feldspar content and purity. Even a 50°C shortfall can produce noticeable underfiring in high-fired ware.
Recognition and consequences
Underfired pieces absorb water readily and craze badly. They lack the structural strength needed for functional tableware or industrial applications. In sanitaryware and insulators, porosity leads to bacterial retention and electrical tracking failures. The material remains friable: it chips and breaks easily during handling, glazing, or stacking. On the kiln shelf, underfired pieces often stick or move, generating warping and deformation.
Common causes include kiln temperature measurement errors (pyrometers out of calibration), premature firing cycle termination, poor insulation leading to localized cool zones, or inadequate burner power. In reduction kilns, insufficient draw or incomplete combustion can prevent the kiln from reaching peak temperature. Load stacking that blocks heat circulation is also frequent.
The term underfired contrasts with overfired (vitrification too complete, causing bloating and glaze running) and properly fired (peak temperature reached and held). In practice, potters and kiln operators speak of pieces being 'short fired' or of the kiln 'not going up,' meaning it failed to reach target temperature. Recognition of underfiring early in a production run prevents waste of labour on bisque-firing and glazing of material destined to fail in service.
