An upcast is the ventilation shaft through which air leaves a mine after passing through the working areas. It works in tandem with a downcast shaft, which supplies fresh air into the mine. The difference in air density between the warm, carbon dioxide-rich air in the upcast and the cooler air in the downcast creates a natural draft that drives circulation, though in modern mines mechanical fans augment or replace this natural convection.

Upcast shafts are typically lined with brick, concrete, or steel to maintain structural integrity against the flow of moist, warm air and to prevent collapse in unstable strata. The shaft must be sized to handle the total volume of air required for the mine's workforce and equipment; a coal mine with hundreds of workers may need an upcast handling tens of thousands of cubic meters of air per hour. The air leaving the upcast carries dust, methane, and other contaminants that have been extracted from the working levels, making the upcast a critical point for monitoring air quality and detecting dangerous gas concentrations.

In deep mines, temperature differentials between upcast and downcast shafts can be substantial. An upcast may discharge air at 25 to 35 degrees Celsius while the downcast supplies air closer to the ambient surface temperature. This temperature gradient helps sustain natural ventilation, but it also means the upcast shaft experiences thermal stress and can develop condensation that weakens linings over time.

The upcast opening at the surface is typically fitted with a cap or screen to prevent rain ingress and to reduce dust emissions to nearby areas. Historic mines often show two prominent shaft heads on the landscape: the downcast, usually the deeper or more substantial structure, and the upcast, often slightly offset. In emergency situations, the upcast can serve as an escape route for workers, though it is primarily a ventilation structure rather than a personnel shaft.
