A type of electron tube that controls electron current through vacuum between electrodes within a sealed container, usually of glass or metal and often designed to be easily installed in and removed from the equipment in which it is used.

A vacuum tube is an evacuated glass or metal envelope containing electrodes that control the flow of electrons across a gap. The absence of air allows electrons to travel unimpeded from a hot cathode to a cooled anode, where their movement can be modulated by intermediate grids. This fundamental property made vacuum tubes the basis of all electronic amplification and switching before solid-state devices became viable in the 1960s.
The cathode is heated (directly or indirectly) to around 800 to 1,200 degrees Celsius, causing electrons to boil off its surface in a process called thermionic emission. These electrons are attracted to a positive anode plate. By placing one or more control grids at negative voltage between them, the tube can amplify weak signals or act as a switch. Pentodes, which have three grids, were standard for audio and radio work; diodes (two elements) were used for rectification; thyratrons contained a gas and handled switching loads.
Industrial applications relied on vacuum tubes long after consumer electronics moved to transistors. Power tubes rated at 100 to 5,000 watts appear in RF transmitters, induction heating equipment, and industrial generators. A large transmitter tube might measure 10 inches tall and weigh several kilograms. These tubes operate at 1,000 to 4,000 volts and require substantial cooling, often by forced air or circulated water.
Reliability and failure modes
Vacuum tube life is finite. A filament eventually weakens and breaks, gas can leak into the envelope over years, or the cathode coating gradually depletes. A failed tube causes loss of output, distortion, or shutdown. Industrial equipment designers made tubes swappable, with standardized bases and pin configurations, so maintenance crews could replace them without reworking the entire chassis.
Manufacturing of industrial vacuum tubes continues in limited runs today, primarily in Russia, China, and Eastern Europe. Replacement tubes for vintage military, medical, and broadcast equipment command high prices. The term "vacuum tube" is now largely historical; the technology survives only in specialty applications where solid-state alternatives cannot handle the power levels, frequency range, or voltage required.
