valley board: the timber backbone of a roof valley
A valley board is the structural timber that sits at the internal angle where two pitched roof planes meet. It runs the full length of the valley, typically 25 to 50 mm thick, and carries the weight of the roof covering materials, the water that channels through the valley, and any snow load. The board itself supports either a metal valley iron (a galvanised steel or lead-lined trough) or traditional undertile guttering, which prevents water from penetrating the joint between the roof sections.
Construction crews usually nail or screw the valley board directly to the roof rafters on both sides of the valley, creating a level or slightly pitched surface that slopes water toward the guttering. The timber must be straight and securely fixed because any sag or movement will cause water to pool, leading to leaks and rot. In older properties, valley boards may be made from softwood like pine; modern buildings often use kiln-dried timber to reduce movement after installation.
Common problems and failure modes
Valley board decay is one of the most common failures in pitched roofs. Water that backs up behind the valley iron, or gaps between the gutter and the board itself, will soak the timber from underneath. Once rot begins, it spreads quickly because the valley area is enclosed and poorly ventilated. Ice dams in winter climates also push water under the gutter, saturating the board. Inadequate fall (slope) of the valley board prevents proper drainage and accelerates moisture damage.
The board name comes simply from its location in the valley of the roof; it is the horizontal or nearly horizontal board that forms the foundation of that valley. This distinguishes it from the angled rafters that form the roof pitch itself. In some regions, it may be called a valley rafter or gutter board, though these terms often refer to the same component.
Replacing a valley board requires partial roof stripping and is a major repair. Specifying the correct thickness and ensuring proper support at the eaves and ridge are critical during new construction. Choosing naturally durable timbers or treating the board with preservative extends its life significantly in high-moisture conditions.
