A viaduct is a bridge structure designed to carry rail or road traffic across a valley, ravine, watercourse, or other terrain that makes a conventional ground-level crossing impractical. Unlike a simple bridge spanning a single obstacle, a viaduct typically consists of multiple spans supported by a series of piers, arches, or columns. This approach distributes weight efficiently and allows the structure to maintain a relatively constant grade across uneven ground.

Viaducts are classified by their primary structural system. Arch viaducts transfer load through curved members to abutments at each end; these were historically common in stone and masonry construction. Beam viaducts use horizontal girders supported on vertical columns or piers, allowing for longer individual spans and easier construction. Cable-stayed and suspension viaducts, while less common, can achieve very long clear spans. The choice depends on span length required, soil bearing capacity, available materials, and budget.

Materials and construction

Early viaducts were built from stone or brick; many 18th and 19th century examples still carry traffic. Modern viaducts typically use reinforced concrete, steel, or combinations of both. Precast concrete beam elements can be assembled rapidly on site. Steel viaducts offer lighter weight and faster erection but require protective coatings against corrosion, particularly in coastal or high-salt environments. Height, exposure to weathering, and seismic risk all influence material selection and design loads.

A viaduct differs from a causeway, which rests substantially on fill or embankment, and from a simple overpass, which typically serves a single crossing purpose over a limited obstacle. The term "viaduct" implies a longer, more engineered structure crossing significant terrain. In rail contexts, viaducts must accommodate longer sight lines and gentler grades than road viaducts. Settlement of individual piers can cause differential movement; modern viaducts incorporate expansion joints at intervals to manage thermal and structural movement without distress.

Maintenance of aging viaducts, particularly post-tensioned concrete or corroding steel structures, has become a major concern for transport authorities managing 20th century infrastructure. Chloride intrusion, rebar corrosion, bearing wear, and fatigue cracking are common failure modes. Inspection typically includes visual survey, ultrasonic testing, and in some cases load testing or health monitoring systems to detect early deterioration before public safety is compromised.
